I’m a wedding & elopement photographer for laid back couples that value the idea of being married more than just having a party. They want photos that show their true selves and represent their love of nature, and prefer to be more natural than overly posed.
Perhaps you’re sitting on your couch in Texas or Colorado or somewhere in the Midwest right now, dreaming about the Oregon Coast or the iconic Mt. Rainier National Park and wondering what it actually looks like to plan a PNW elopement from out of state. You’ve been Googling PNW elopement locations, saving photos on Pinterest, and imagining what it would feel like to say your vows somewhere impossibly beautiful with wind in your hair and zero obligation to please anyone but each other.
But every time you start planning, you end up with a dozen tabs open and even more questions. You’re feeling overwhelmed by the whole process and just want someone to walk you through this. I promise, it’s easier than it seems right now!
I work with out-of-state couples ALL the time. There is something so special about helping someone fall in love with the Pacific Northwest from afar, and then getting to witness the moment they arrive and see it for the very first time in real life. I live for all the excited gasps and “oh my gosh it’s even MORE beautiful in person.”
So if you’re dreaming of traveling to Oregon or Washington for your elopement but have no idea where to start, this one’s for you. I’ll walk through exactly how this works and why you absolutely don’t have to figure any of this out alone!

Planning any wedding from out of state sounds daunting on paper. And yes, planning a PNW elopement from across the country involves some logistics you wouldn’t have if you lived here. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
But when you book me as your elopement photographer, you get a partner who knows the Pacific Northwest well and has helped many couples plan amazing days in Oregon and Washington, even if they’ve never visited before. I also genuinely love every single part of the planning process, not just the photography!
You don’t need to know the PNW. You just need someone who does.
“From the moment that we met, Erica felt like someone we had known for years, more akin to a close friend. More than merely photography, Erica helped construct our entire day with photography as an element of an overall experience. Erica took the time to understand our personalities and what we had in mind, constructed the perfect itinerary and found amazing locations, and made incredible suggestions along the way. She scouted out the locations beforehand and told us exactly what to expect before we even made it to Oregon. The day itself was magical. Erica met us as our first stop, and guided us each step along the way. She was equal parts tour guide, photographer, planner, and friend, and she fit seamlessly within our group. ”

This is the number one fear I hear from out-of-state couples: “How do we pick a place we’ve never even seen?” And I completely understand why that feels scary, because your elopement location isn’t just a backdrop. It is a character in your love story.
When I help you find the perfect location, I don’t just pick the prettiest spot on a map. I get to know YOU first. What lights you up? Are you drawn to dramatic ocean cliffs or soft, mossy forest? Do you want to hike to your ceremony spot or walk five minutes from the car? Is sunrise your thing, or is waking up before dawn is the last thing you want to do?
From that conversation (and I ask a LOT of thoughtful questions), I build a custom location list that actually matches who you are, not just what photographs beautifully. Though the places will absolutely do that.
Plus, I scout locations in advance and share exactly what to expect before you ever buy a plane ticket. Terrain, parking, what the light looks like at different times of day, whether the trail is genuinely doable in a dress — all of it.
“Erica listened intently to our wants and asked very thoughtful questions to help us figure out what those wants actually were.”

When your elopement day comes, you won’t be stepping into the unknown. You’ll arrive at a place I’ve already visited and prepared just for you.

Many of the best elopement spots in Oregon and Washington, like National Parks, State Parks, and Forest Service land, need special-use permits for ceremonies. Most places have group size limits, rules about what you can bring, and set reservation times. And I handle it all for you!
I research permit requirements, guide you through the application process, and make sure everything is set well before your date. I’m also ordained, so if you want a private ceremony without an officiant, I’ve got you there, too. Minister Erica is at your service!
Getting your marriage license in Oregon or Washington is simple. I’ll guide you through everything you need to know for whichever state you choose.
One of the best things about eloping is that you and your partner can make your ceremony exactly how you want. Some couples get their marriage license before their elopement day, but many don’t. You can make it official at home and have a symbolic ceremony later in the PNW.

For Oregon elopements, Portland International Airport (PDX) is your best bet for most locations. It has great connections from nearly everywhere and is right in the heart of the state. Redmond/Bend Airport (RDM) is a fantastic, smaller option if you’re dreaming of Central Oregon’s high desert and mountain landscape.
For Washington elopements, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is a central choice with easy access to the Cascades, Olympic Peninsula, and more.
I always recommend renting a car. The PNW is perfect for road trips, and having your own vehicle lets you enjoy the scenery on the way to your locations. Driving along the Oregon coast or into the Cascades on your elopement day IS part of the adventure.
For lodging, it depends on the atmosphere you want and if you’re bringing guests. You can rent a coastal inn, a cozy forest cabin, a treehouse, or book a boutique hotel in a mountain town. The PNW has it all, and I’m happy to recommend options based on your plans and vision.

One of the things my couples consistently tell me they’re most grateful for is how smoothly their day actually ran. There is never any scrambling or stress, or wondering what comes next. Just one beautiful moment flowing into the next one.
And none of that happens by accident. I think about sunrise and sunset times for your specific date and location. Then, I factor in travel time, hiking time, getting-ready time, golden hour timing, and all the in-between moments I know you’ll want to slow down and actually enjoy. I also consider the order of the day in a way that lets everything build, so that by the time you’re standing there saying your vows, you’re not rushing or anxious or wondering if you’re behind schedule. You get to be there fully present!

“I’ll admit that I was skeptical about the itinerary — e.g, how could she predict how long a mixed group would take to hike and return to transportation? — but I was shocked to find out how precise her predictions were. And she was prepared for seemingly every eventuality: Umbrellas? Check. Extra jackets? Check. Impromptu allergy medicine? Check. It strikes us as incredible that our review has only now gotten to the quality of the photography (we hope that you get a sense that Erica is far more than the word “photographer” gives her credit for). Our pictures captured everything that we wanted from our day and more. From the portraits to the group pictures to the special moments along the way, Erica captured everything with her special and extraordinary touch. If we could give 10/5 stars to Erica, we would — but 5/5 is what we are limited to. We have no hesitation in recommending her to you: quite simply, she is the best. And in just the course of a few months virtually and a day in person, she became our friend.Erica, thank you for making our day so special!
I can’t recommend Erica enough! If you are looking at photographers for your special day look no further! My husband and I chose Erica to photograph our elopement in Bend, Oregon; and we couldn’t have had a better day. She is so much more than a photographer; she kept everyone on schedule while keeping our wants/needs at the forefront. She brings comfort, warmth and laughter to what could be a stressful day. Even though we had just met her the day before it seemed like we had known her for years. At the end of the day everyone was talking about how wonderful our photographer was. Most of all she made our day fun and enjoyable and gave us photos we can cherish for a lifetime. Erica was the best decision we could have made for our wedding day!”

Trusting strangers on the internet with your wedding day is one of the biggest worries, I get it! You’re booking vendors you’ve never met in person, in a state you’ve never been to, for one of the most important days of your life. That takes a leap of faith.
When you work with me, I connect you with the best vendors. I only recommend people I trust and would hire myself—florists, hair and makeup artists, officiants, musicians. I’ve worked with them and know they care about their work and their couples. Connection and care matter to me as much as beautiful photos, and I want everyone involved in your day to share that energy.
To be honest, though, for a lot of my couples, the vendor team is really small. Many out-of-state elopements are beautifully simple with just the two of you, a small bouquet, a delicious picnic, and a day full of adventure. We’ll talk through what actually matters to you and build a team (or a beautiful solo day!) around that.

Let me put it another way: nothing is really going wrong. We just adjust and go with the flow.
Weather in the PNW is famously unpredictable, and I want you to genuinely not be afraid of that. Rain here isn’t a disaster! It’s atmospheric, moody and actually so beautiful to photograph. Mist rolling through a coastal forest or fog hanging over a mountain lake is a masterpiece.
That said, I always come prepared. Every elopement I plan has a backup plan — alternative locations, timing adjustments, and a photographer (hi, that’s me!) who has navigated enough PNW weather to know exactly how to make any condition work. I also come prepared with umbrellas and extras of necessities. I am prepared for essentially every eventuality, because my job is to make sure nothing derails your day.
“Erica’s collaborative approach ensured every detail aligned perfectly with our vision. She demonstrated remarkable adaptability by seamlessly adjusting plans on short notice as weather conditions shifted — turning potential challenges into opportunities for stunning photography.
Erica’s dedication to excellence and client satisfaction is unparalleled. For couples seeking a photographer who delivers both artistic excellence and peace of mind, Erica Swantek Photography is the definitive choice. “

Picture waking up somewhere beautiful, maybe a cozy cabin or a hotel room with a view. You make coffee, get ready slowly and intentionally, and play your favorite music in the background. Today is the day. We start the day slow, photographing those sweet moments of you putting your dress on, the details of your jewelry, and all the little things that make your day special.
Then we head somewhere stunning. Maybe it’s a misty Oregon forest, or a windswept stretch of Pacific coastline, or a Washington mountain overlook. Here you are together and suddenly all the planning and logistics and the decision-making just… disappears. Because you’re here and it’s real, and it’s so much more beautiful than you imagined.
We spend the day adventuring together, moving from location to location, chasing light, pausing to just BE in the moment, laughing, crying happy tears, eating something delicious… absolutely no pressure or performance. Just the two of you, doing exactly what you dreamed of doing.
We end the night as the sun sets, lanterns glowing, and the warm embrace of each other knowing this is the day you wanted and envisioned all along.

“I don’t know if it was fate or just really good luck that brought us to Erica’s website when looking for a photographer for our PNW elopement. My future wife and I didn’t exactly know what we wanted but we got everything and more when we found Erica. From our first interaction, she had a way of putting us completely at ease with all the stress of planning a wedding…even a small elopement! Her knowledge of the area, of weddings, and of photography apparent. Erica listened intently to our wants and asked very thoughtful questions to help us figure out what those wants actually were. Throughout this process, Erica really became a friend which made all the time we spent together on our wedding day so comfortable, just like hanging out with your buddy who happened to be taking pictures of one of the best days of your life. We cannot thank Erica enough for the time and energy she put in to making our elopement come to life! And we have gorgeous pictures hanging on our walls to remember the day forever!! The hardest part is having to decide which ones to print out because they were ALL SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I would have ZERO doubts recommending Erica to anyone looking for a magical PNW experience. Thank you!!!!!! forever grateful!”
