Best Places to Elope Near Anchorage, Alaska: Easy Views, Hiking & Helicopter Adventures 

Alaska is massive, and the landscape changes dramatically from one valley to the next, and when you’re scrolling through photos of glaciers and mountains and coastline and alpine lakes, everything looks incredible. But having that many options can also make choosing your Alaska elopement location feel a little overwhelming!

You might find yourself wondering whether you should choose the most dramatic view, whether you need to hike to get the full Alaska experience, or if booking a helicopter is worth it. The good news is that there really isn’t one “best” Alaska elopement location.

The right place depends on what you want your day to FEEL like, how adventurous you want to be, how much hiking you actually enjoy, who you’re bringing with you, and what experiences matter most.

This past summer, I spent time exploring and photographing several different styled elopement experiences around Anchorage, including Eklutna Lake, Hatcher Pass, Knik Glacier, Girdwood, Byron Glacier, and Whittier, and these days show just how much variety is possible near Anchorage and how different locations can work together within one full elopement day. The images throughout this blog are from those styled sessions, and they represent the kinds of experiences I help my couples create.

So instead of giving you a giant list of beautiful places and asking you to pick one, I want to help you think about which type of Alaska elopement experience feels most like you.

Why Elope Near Anchorage, Alaska?

Anchorage is my favorite place to use as a home base for an Alaska elopement because you get all the convenience of a city while still being incredibly close to incredible landscapes. You can fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, rent a car, stay in an Airbnb or hotel, and have easy access to groceries and other amenities.

Then, within an hour or two, you can be surrounded by mountains, glaciers, alpine lakes, waterfalls, forests, and coastal scenery. You really don’t have to spend your whole trip driving across Alaska to find stunning landscapes.

For the Couple Who Wants Epic Scenery Without a Huge Hike

You absolutely do NOT need to hike for hours to get incredible views near Anchorage. There are plenty of locations where you can drive most of the way and enjoy mountain, lake, glacier, or coastal scenery with little to no hiking.

Eklutna Lake

About 45 minutes north of Anchorage, Eklutna Lake is a stunning glacial lake with turquoise water surrounded by mountains and forest. For one of the styled elopements, we used Eklutna Lake for the first half of the day before heading out on a helicopter tour of Knik Glacier. The day included a first look, portraits, cake cutting, and time by the lake before leaving for a completely different adventure that afternoon.

Beluga Point

Beluga Point is one of those places that completely takes your breath away, and it’s right off the Seward Highway about 20 minutes south of Anchorage. The overlook sits on the edge of Turnagain Arm with massive mountains rising directly across the water and tidal flats stretching out below. There’s virtually no walking required to get here, and it combines beautifully with other locations further down the highway.

Whittier & Prince William Sound

The tiny harbor town of Whittier is about an hour and a half from Anchorage (including passing through the longest highway tunnel in North America, which is an adventure in itself!) and it gives you access to one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in Alaska. Prince William Sound, with its glaciers, islands, and mountain-backed waterways, is absolutely extraordinary. Whittier itself has this rugged, authentic, small-town fishing harbor energy that I love as a backdrop for portraits. You could grab fish and chips, toast with Alaskan beers on the waterfront, and wander through the docks and coves. 

For the Couple Who Wants to Hike Into Their Wedding Day

If hiking together is already something you love, then it can be such a fun way to make your Alaska elopement feel like an actual adventure you’re experiencing together. But you don’t have to prove that you’re “adventurous enough” to elope in Alaska!

You don’t need to hike ten miles because you think that’s what an adventure elopement is supposed to look like. If you love hiking, let’s choose a trail that fits your vibe and fitness level. If you don’t, there are plenty of other ways to have an incredible Alaska elopement.

Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass is great because you can combine easier-access locations with hiking in the same day. For the styled elopement created here, the couple had their first look near the Little Susitna River, held the ceremony near Summit Lake, stopped for a picnic, and then headed toward the Gold Cord Lake area for a hike.

The hike added another layer to the day without making the entire elopement revolve around hiking. You could also keep the hike shorter or choose another trail, depending on your fitness level and how much time you want to spend on it.

Byron Glacier

Byron Glacier is a gorgeous and accessible option for couples who want to visit a glacier during their Alaska elopement without needing to book a helicopter ride. The trail is about 1.4 miles each way and relatively flat and easy, winding through lush forest before opening onto a rocky glacial valley, with the glacier visible at the end.

Byron Glacier is about an hour south of Anchorage and sits very close to Portage Lake and the Whittier tunnel, making it easy to combine with other locations along the Turnagain Arm corridor. 

Virgin Creek Falls

If you love waterfalls and lush forests, then Virgin Creek Falls near Girdwood is a great option. You take a short hike through mossy, old-growth-style forest that leads to a gorgeous multi-tiered waterfall.

Knik Glacier Helicopter Elopement

If you’re already traveling all the way to Alaska for your elopement, you may be thinking about adding something that you probably wouldn’t do on an average vacation. This is where a helicopter adventure can be absolutely incredible!

You do not need to take a helicopter to have an epic Alaska elopement. Some of my favorite scenery near Anchorage is accessible by car or on hikes, but booking a helicopter ride is worth it simply for the experience. A helicopter tour gives you access to landscapes that would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible to reach on your wedding day.

Knik Glacier, accessible via helicopter from the Palmer area about an hour north of Anchorage, is one of the most extraordinary elopement experiences I’ve ever been part of. You fly over braided glacial rivers and mountain terrain before landing on ancient blue ice with glaciated peaks rising in every direction. Some helicopter glacier tours include the option to kayak on glacial melt pools right there on the ice, which is exactly as incredible as it sounds!

Helicopter flights in Alaska are weather-dependent, and this is something I talk about in depth in my full Alaska elopement planning guide. Cloud cover, wind, and visibility all affect whether a flight can safely happen on any given day. This is completely normal and not something to stress about, but it IS something to plan around. I always recommend having buffer days built into your trip so that if a flight needs to be rescheduled, you have room to adjust without losing anything from your experience.
