I’m a wedding & elopement photographer for laid back couples that value the idea of being married more than just having a party. They want photos that show their true selves and represent their love of nature, and prefer to be more natural than overly posed.
One of the most common questions I get asked by my couples “What do we do if the weather is bad?” When you plan an outdoor elopement, you have to be prepared for any weather, as Mother Nature might have her own plans for your day.
As your PNW elopement photographer and right-hand woman, I always have plans B, C, and maybe even a plan D for my couples. However, as long as it’s not dangerous, I definitely photograph in all types of weather.
There are, of course, preparations for us to make to ensure we’re ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us and make certain your elopement day is absolutely freaking amazing! Here are some of my best tips on how to prepare for any weather!
First things first, let’s talk about the unpredictable nature of outdoor elopements. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, road closures, bad weather, or other unexpected conditions can throw a wrench in our plans. That’s why having a few backup locations that are nearby is crucial. Being flexible can ensure that your day remains perfect, no matter what. Early in your planning process, decide on some alternative spots just in case, like staying inside your cozy Airbnb, for example! You’ll feel super prepared knowing you have options.
Depending on where you elope, sunrise can be the best time for clearer skies and cooler temperatures. Many places forecast rain more commonly in the afternoon. Planning your ceremony for early morning can mean better weather and less sweating if you’re in a hot climate. Of course, in the coastal areas of the PNW, fog is more likely in the morning, so if you’re hoping for less moody vibes, sunset could be a better option.
The weather can change quickly and multiple times within a day — chilly mornings, sudden rain, or windy afternoons. Layers are going to be your best friend!
You’ll want to have some base layers, like fleece or wool leggings/yoga pants underneath. They keep you warm and blend well in photos if they match your skin color. I also recommend bringing something warm like a sweater, shawl, fleece, or down jacket. Choose options you won’t mind being photographed in!
You should also bring a rain shell or windbreaker to protect you against the elements, like rain, snow and wind. I will always bring along my clear umbrellas which add a cute prop for your wedding photos too. And lastly, gloves, mittens, a beanie, or ear warmers might come in handy as well!
Good, appropriate footwear is important for most occasions, but you’ll especially appreciate it on your elopement day. More often than not, I’ll recommend going for function over form, as they don’t tend to be a focal point of your photos. And for most locations, I will personally recommend you don’t wear heels or smooth-bottom shoes. Supportive shoes with good grip are key so you could move without worry of any accident!
If you’re eloping somewhere warm or having a beach elopement, you could wear good, sturdy sandals (or go barefoot at the beach!). If you’re eloping where it’s cold and during winter, I recommend having extra room in your boots for thick socks and toe warmers. Traction spikes can also come in handy if your location has the potential of being snowy or icy.
Proper nourishment is absolutely essential for the best elopement experience.
Always carry enough water to stay hydrated, especially if you’re hiking or spending a lot of time outdoors. Dehydration can sneak up on you, even in cooler weather! You could also consider packing a thermos for warm drinks and a water filtration system if you’re planning on camping somewhere overnight.
You’ll also want to pack plenty of snacks to keep your energy levels up. Nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, and sandwiches are great options. Make sure to bring enough for the duration of your adventure and any unexpected delays.
Many couples like to pack a picnic to enjoy after saying their vows, so that is also a fun idea to consider! Charcuterie with stunning views? Yes, please!
Of course, you’ll want to pack many other things to be prepared for your elopement day, however, these are specific to help you prepare for the weather.
Rain, wind, snow, or sunshine, it’s all part of your unique story. Your comfort and experience are my top priorities. I always come prepared with clear umbrellas, hand and foot warmers, and extra layers to ensure you stay cozy and dry. Remember, the key is to stay flexible and be ready to pivot if needed.
